William “Billy” Maurice Cornish, 75 of Cambridge died on Monday November 4, 2019 at his home surrounded by family. He was 76 years old. He was born in Cambridge, Maryland on August 23, 1943 the son of the late Loretta Cornish and Paul Trowell.
After graduating from Maces Lane, Billy served in the United States Army from 1965–1967 and was honorably discharged on March 2, 1971. While serving in Vietnam he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Metal. He also spoke fluent Vietnamese that enabled him to be an entrepreneur in 1965. Billy had a variety of career choices from being a maintenance mechanic (Chun King and ConAgra Poultry Co.), machinist (Cambridge Swire Cloth) and an alcohol/drug volunteer counselor.
Billy was part of the Civil Rights Movements of the 1960s in Cambridge and was affiliated with the Mt Olive Baptist Church. He was a faithful Redskin’s fan as well as USC, Georgetown and “Team Lebron James.” His interests were billiards (where he would travel and participate in tournament), reading music, traveling, studying Black History, collecting African and Japanese art. He also enjoyed photography and hanging with family and friends.
Billy is survived by three children: Montre’ Cephas (Cindy) of Mardela Springs, Crystal Camper of Delaware, and Ronae Grubb of Cambridge; his spouse, Lynn Canchon Cornish of Cambridge, six grandchildren: Monet Cephas, Charisma Cephas, I’mijah Camper, Destiny Carter, Ayanna Coley, Nnamdi Chandler; 3 great-grandchildren, one brother Larrell Cornish (Bonnie) of Cambridge; 3 sisters: Sharon Cornish of Raleigh NC, Carolyn Cornish and Terri Cornish (Ricky) both of Cambridge; one uncle, Leroy Cornish of Cambridge, 3 very special friends: Larry Henneghen, Charles Fletcher, and Damonta Sampson, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his “pops” Purnell McCready; two aunts: Lois Jean Christian and Valerie Cornish; one uncle, Corporal James Cornish, and a special cousin, Gary Cornish
